Motion and 3D websites: when they're worth it

Motion and 3D are worth paying for when they explain something a still image can't: how a product works, how a space feels, or what a studio's work looks like in motion. If they only decorate, a fast, well-designed static site usually performs better.

When motion and 3D earn their place

  • Hardware and deep-tech products. An exploded view or a turntable shows how parts fit together in seconds.
  • Film, post-production, VFX and music studios. The work moves, so the site should show it moving: reels, cutdowns, before-and-after grades.
  • Launches and campaigns. A short, memorable scroll story can carry a single message well.
  • Spaces and places. Architecture, venues and interiors read better with depth.

When to skip them

  • When visitors come to do one quick task, such as book, call or buy.
  • When the content isn't ready. Motion can't fix a weak message.
  • When most visitors use older phones or slow connections and the 3D isn't essential.

How to keep a motion site fast and accessible

  1. Keep 3D to one section. Put it in one place, load it only when needed, and keep the text of the page as normal HTML that search engines and AI assistants can read.
  2. Animate cheap properties. Transform and opacity stay smooth; animating layout does not.
  3. Respect reduced motion. Visitors who ask their device for less motion should get a still, complete version.
  4. Give a pause control. Anything that moves on its own for more than five seconds needs a way to pause it (WCAG 2.2, success criterion 2.2.2).
  5. Test on real phones. Not just a desktop browser at a small width.

The hero on our homepage follows these rules: the layered preview cycles through four render passes, pauses when you hover or press pause, and shows a still final frame to anyone who prefers reduced motion.

What it costs with us

Scroll animation is included in the Growth package ($1,900). A story told as visitors scroll, with one 3D scene, is Signature Immersive, from $3,900. 3D models, renders and motion graphics made by our studio are add-ons, quoted per project.

Do 3D websites hurt SEO?

A 3D website only hurts SEO when the content lives inside the 3D scene where search engines can't read it. Keeping the 3D in one section and the page's text in normal HTML avoids that problem.

Does motion make a website slower?

Motion makes a website slower only when it animates expensive properties or loads heavy libraries up front. Animating transform and opacity, loading 3D on demand and testing on phones keeps a motion site fast.
